Overview
Transcript AI is a high-level analysis tool in Delve that helps you explore transcripts efficiently. It is designed to:
Familiarize yourself with your data through iterative exploration and discovery
Generate initial high-level codes and themes from a transcript.
Summarize a transcript in 2–3 sentences.
Suggest relevant quotes or potential snippets for coding.
Map frameworks or theories to relevant sections of your transcript
Transcript AI is best used as the first step in an iterative coding workflow. After generating broad codes or summaries with Transcript AI, you can refine your analysis using AI Chat and optionally apply your established codebook using Apply Codes Using AI.
Always combine AI suggestions with your own knowledge of your study, data, and research goals to ensure meaningful analysis. Transcript AI is advisory, not a replacement for human review.
Note: You will need to agree to sign up for our Beta testing agreement in order to access AI features.
Where to Access Transcript AI
Open any Transcript page and click the AI button in the top right corner.
The Ask Delve AI panel will open on the right-hand side of your workspace.
From here, you can ask AI questions about the selected transcript and your existing codebook.
Using Transcript AI
Step 1: Select Transcript
Open the transcript you want to analyze.
No additional filters are needed, but keep in mind it only analyzes the selected transcript.
Step 2: Ask Your Question
Type your question into the panel. Transcript AI will read the full transcript text and reference your codebook (codes and their definitions - not snippets) to answer your question.
Examples:
“Generate initial codes for this transcript.”
“Summarize this transcript in 3 sentences.”
“Suggest potential quotes for coding.”
"Map [frameworks or theories] to relevant sections of this transcript."
"Walk me through the main ideas discussed here."
Step 3: Refine and Follow Up
Iterate with Transcript AI to clarify or improve outputs:
Ask for additional summary details: “Expand this summary with more context.”
Request example quotes: “Provide quotes to support each suggested code.”
Adjust focus: “Highlight themes related to [topic or methodology].”
Transcript AI is designed for broad analysis, so further refinement should be done with AI Chat or manual review.
Step 4: Working with Results
Transcript AI provides blue links that jump you straight to the quote's position in the transcript, with auto-highlighting so you can code it quickly.
Create new codes directly from the chat—your codebook is positioned directly to the left for easy access.
Step 5: Optional Next Steps
After using Transcript AI:
Use AI Chat to explore subcodes, code descriptions, or snippet-level questions.
Use Apply Codes Using AI to automatically apply your established codebook to transcripts.
Managing Transcript Chats
Start a New Chat
To start a new chat on a different topic, click the three dots in the top right of the Ask Delve AI panel. Select New Chat.
This will clear the dialog box for you to start a new set of questions.
You can view past chats by clicking the three dots and selecting View All Chats.
A window will open with a list of your old chats. Click on a chat title to open it.
To remove a chat, click the traschan icon to the far right. Use caution before deleting a chat, this cannot be undone.
AI Recommended Codes
You can ask AI to recommend codes and definitions based on your transcript. You will still need to manually create the codes suggested.
Note: Keep in mind the suggested codes are based off of a single transcript and your existing codebook. You should continue to review your codes and make sure they align with the entirety of your project as you go.
Using Transcript Quotes
The AI can provide direct quotes from the transcript either to support it’s answer or to provide potential snippets for a code. These quotes will be blue.
You can click on a quote and the transcript will automatically jump to the quote location with the text highlighted. You can easily code the quote from there.
Best Practices
Review your codebook and research objectives before asking questions.
Use the blue links to jump to quotes and review them in full context—this helps verify AI interpretations and coding suggestions.
Update your codebook as you go—your codebook shows the AI your analysis progress and helps it provide better, more informed responses.
Start a new chat for different topics to keep analysis organized.
Combine AI suggestions with your own understanding of the data.
Ask follow up questions, and be specific. AI explores data best iteratively.
Avoid leading questions. Don't ask the AI to confirm your assumptions or find specific quotes that support a predetermined conclusion—this may introduce bias into your analysis.
