Overview
Apply Codes Using AI is a deductive coding tool in Delve that applies your existing codebook (codes and descriptions) to a single transcript automatically.
This means the AI model will review your codes and their descriptions and then search the selected transcript for snippets that match the codes. The AI model will then apply the codes to those snippets with a snippet memo explaining its reasoning for coding that snippet.
Note: AI references code names and the first paragraph of each code description to decide how to code snippets.
The Apply Codes Using AI model is designed to save time by helping you categorize snippets according to your predefined codes.
Note: To access Apply Codes Using AI, you must join Delve’s AI Beta program by accepting the Beta Terms. The first time you access one of Delve's AI features you will be prompted to accept or deny the terms.
Apply Codes Using AI
Open the transcript you want to code and click the three dots in the upper right corner.
Select Apply Codes Using AI from the menu.
Click the Apply codes using AI button to start the process.
Note: You can navigate away from the page while AI is coding. Once complete, coded snippets will appear in a pop-up list for review.
Best Practices for Apply Codes Using AI
Step 1: Prepare Your Codebook
The clarity and completeness of your codebook directly impact the accuracy of AI coding. You can always use the Transcript AI and AI Chat features to hone your research themes and codebook.
Consider the following best practices for preparing your codebook:
Make sure your codes have clear, detailed descriptions.
Ensure codes are distinct and non-overlapping.
Add any missing codes for completeness.
Consider including an “Other/Miscellaneous” code for snippets that don’t fit predefined codes.
Step 2: Select Transcript and Apply Codes
Run the AI to apply your codes to the transcript.
Step 3: Review and Adjust
Check each snippet to ensure the code assignment makes sense.
If a snippet is incorrectly coded, click the snippet and remove the code or reassign it manually.
Use AI memos to understand why codes were applied.
Step 4: Iterative Improvement
Update your codebook with clearer definitions or new codes if needed.
Re-run Apply Codes Using AI on the same transcript to improve coding accuracy.
FAQs
Q: Can I remove AI-applied codes if they are incorrect?
A: Yes. Open the transcript and click the three dots in the top right. Select Apply Codes Using AI and then Remove codes applied with AI. This removes all AI-applied codes from the transcript, allowing you to recode. See the article Remove Codes Applied by AI for more information.
Q: Does Apply Codes Using AI analyze multiple transcripts at once?
A: No. AI applies codes to one transcript at a time.
Q: Can AI discover new codes using this feature?
A: No. Apply Codes Using AI only applies existing codes from your codebook. For discovering subcodes or generating new codes, use AI Chat or Transcript AI.
Q: How can I improve AI coding accuracy?
A: Review your codebook for clarity, distinct codes, detailed descriptions, and completeness. Iteratively refine and rerun AI coding as needed.
Q: Can I code my transcript with AI more than once?
A: If you have updated your codebook and would like to reapply your codes to the transcript, you first need to remove the originally applied codes and from there you can re-run the AI coding with your updated codebook.
